Does music sooth the soul ?

Study on auditory perception and pain.

Note that we no longer accept participants for this study. Thank you for your understanding

BRAMS, the International Research Laboratory on Brain, Music and Sound (UdM – McGill) is seeking participants for a study that aims to understand how audition and pain interact together.

For approximately 3 hours of your time (2-hour preparation, 1-hour experiment), you will be compensated 40$. During some parts of the study you will receive a painful stimulation for several seconds. It will be delivered safely by a thermal stimulation device. The intensity of the pain will never exceed a threshold that you will have judged as acceptable during the preparation.

There are no health risks associated with this study. The electric activity of your brain will be recorded non-invasively while you’ll listen to sounds. On top of contributing to the progress in neuroscience research, your participation will allow you to receive an electro-encephalographic recording of your brain activation. A parking space can be made available.

Participants (male or female) shall meet the following criteria :

  • aged between 18 and 55,
  • no history of neurological disorders
  • no severe hearing loss ,
  • not suffer from chronic pain.

This research is under the supervision of Marc Schönwiesner, PhD, associate professor at the psychology department of Université de Montréal.

BRAMS lab is located on 1430, BOULEVARD Mont-Royal,(Outremont)
