Seeking participants for a LINGUISTICS STUDY

You are being invited to participate in a research study for a master’s thesis related to the perception and imitation of a second language.

The purpose of this project is to better understand how native English-speaking musicians can perceive and imitate the intonation of a second language.

study

Your participation in this study would consist of one meeting of 1 hour 15 minutes that would take place at UQAM or at McGill.

If you comply with the criteria below and if you do the experiment, you will receive compensation of $20 and will also have the chance to win one of 2 pairs of tickets at Cinéma du Parc.

To be eligible for the study, you must:

  • Be aged between 18 and 45 years old;
  • Be a native English speaker;
  • Speak only English (no second language including French);
  • Have been playing a musical instrument for at least 7 years. For some methodological reasons, the human voice cannot be considered as a musical instrument;
  • Play music at least 5 times a week and at least 1 hour a day on average;
  • Not have a visual or auditory handicap (except for a diminution of visual acuity corrected by glasses or contact lenses).

The experiment will take place as follows. The participants will be asked to realize an oral competency task and to fill in a sociodemographic questionnaire. Then, they will be invited to do an intonation perception task, a musical aptitude task, a phonological memory task and an intonation imitation task. All necessary equipment will be provided and the study is confidential.

If you are interested in participating in the study, you can send an email to doyon.carolane@courrier.uqam.ca. Your help would be really appreciated.
