DESCRIPTION:Psychology of music in adolescence: Developmental and cultural perspectives

Abstract: The objective of this presentation will be to situate my research among studies that pertain to the potential role of music in the psychosocial development of adolescents (e.g., aesthetics; identity; socialisation; emotion regulation and coping; personality and motivation; gender roles; and positive youth development). The importance of cultural aspects of music in adolescence will also be discussed (e.g., music preferences; music motivation and functions; dance; language; social network and multitasking; ethnicity and cultural diversity; and cultural competence in music-based interventions).
Bio: Dr. Dave Miranda, Assistant Professor at the School of Psychology at the University of Ottawa, obtained his doctoral degree in psychology at the University of Montreal in 2007. He completed postdoctoral studies at the University of Ottawa (FQRSC) and at McGill University (SSHRC). His research interests are situated at the intersection of music psychology and adolescent psychology.
