Investigating Music’s Impact on Pain Perception
Abstract: Music has long been used as a tool for pain relief, yet the mechanisms behind its effectiveness remain largely unexplored. In this presentation, I will share findings from studies conducted in my lab that examine which musical features are most effective in alleviating pain and explore potential underlying neurobiological mechanisms.
Bio: Dr. Mathieu Roy is associate professor in the department of Psychology at McGill University, and holder of the Canada Research Chair (tier 2) on brain imaging of chronic and experimental pain. His lab studies how the brain produces the subjective of pain, and how pain perception may be altered by various non-pharmacological interventions such as music, placebo effects, distraction, or physical exercise.
