Valentin Bégel, Ph.D.
Valentin Bégel (Ph.D.) is an Associate Professor (Maître de Conférence) in physiology, neurophysiology, and neuropsychology at Paris Cité University (Paris, France). He joined the “Institut des Sciences du Sport-Santé de Paris” (URP3625 – I3SP) in 2022. He received a Ph.D. degree in Human Movement Science at the University of Montpellier (France) in October 2017 and completed his training with a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Lille (France). He then obtained a CD-CREATE network award, funded by the Canadian National Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) to work as a postdoctoral fellow at McGill University (Montréal) for three years, under the supervision of BRAMS member Professor Caroline Palmer.
Overall, Valentin Bégel’s translational approach aims at i) explaining basic cognitive and sensorimotor mechanisms of music processing and ii) using music for education, motor training, and rehabilitation. He conducts research on rhythm perception and production, with a focus on the use of rhythm as a rehabilitation tool, and developed innovative methods using sound to train rhythmic, motor, and cognitive skills. He also uses non-linear dynamic approaches combined with physiological measures, neurophysiology, and virtual reality to investigate synchronization in various contexts, such as music, social interactions, or physical activities. Currently, Valentin Bégel conducts research projects supported by the French National Research Agency (INTERACT, Young Researcher Grant), the Society for Education Music and Psychology Research (SEMPRE Arnold Bentley New Initiatives Fund), and the Circle-U network (Interdisciplinary Thematic Research Networks).
