Broadening the toolset of neuromusic research
Abstract: Music making and listening often involve subtle changes in physiological and mental states that can be difficult to measure and understand, especially in less restricted contexts, like a concert hall or home environment. In this talk, I will share recently developed methods from my lab that attempt to broaden the scope of what can be studied in musical contexts. From jsPsych toolboxes to adaptive Arduino-based systems, to deep-learning for social gaze analyses, this talk will provide an overview of methods for studying musical engagement from physiological to behavioural levels, individual to social groups, and listening to performing contexts, as well as examples of the types of new questions that can be answered.
