Sina Esmaeili
Sina Esmaeili is a PhD candidate in Biomedical Engineering at Université de Montréal, working in the Computational and Cognitive Neuroscience Lab (CoCo Lab) under the supervision of Dr. Karim Jerbi. His research focuses on mobile brain/body imaging, EEG signal processing, and neural decoding of human movement and cognition in naturalistic settings.
His doctoral work investigates the cortical control of locomotion by combining EEG, movement data, electromyography, and machine-learning approaches to decode gait-related variables such as muscle activity and joint kinematics. More recently, his work has expanded to cognitive–motor interactions during natural walking, including mobile EEG studies of brain activity during tasks such as lexical decision-making while walking. This research emphasizes the validation of wearable EEG systems and the development of reproducible methods for ecological cognitive neuroscience.
In parallel, Sina serves as Lead Engineer at the Unité de neuroimagerie fonctionnelle (UNF) / Neurothèque at the Centre de recherche de l’Institut universitaire de gériatrie de Montréal (CRIUGM). In this role, he develops, maintains, and optimizes EEG and multimodal neuroimaging infrastructure. His work includes hardware integration, acquisition systems, experimental triggering, synchronization across EEG, motion capture, EMG, and other modalities, data-management workflows, and quality-control procedures. He also develops standardized preprocessing and analysis pipelines and contributes to documentation, training materials, and open resources for researchers and students.
Sina is also involved in open-source software development for EEG and mobile neuroimaging research. His current software work includes artifact-removal and signal-cleaning tools for MNE-Python, including MNE-denoise; a Python/JAX implementation of AMICA for scalable EEG source separation; and MNE-MoBi, a Python toolbox for mobile brain/body imaging workflows. His broader research interests include mobile EEG, neural decoding, brain–body interactions, artifact removal, independent component analysis, multimodal neuroimaging, and open scientific software.
He holds an M.Sc. in Biomechanical Engineering from Sharif University of Technology and a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Tehran.
